What a calorie actually is
A calorie is a unit of energy — like a gallon is a unit of gas. Food and drinks put energy in; living and moving burn it.
The full lesson
Your body runs on energy the way a car runs on fuel. We measure that energy in calories. Everything you eat or drink carries some (water carries none). Your body spends calories every second: keeping your heart beating, your brain thinking, your body warm — and more when you move.
That is the whole idea. There is nothing mysterious about a calorie; it is just a way to count energy.
Remember
- Calories are energy, not a moral score.
- Every food has them; water does not.
A gentle correction: Calories are not "bad." Too few is as much a problem as too many.
Try this: Look at one label today and just notice the calorie number. No judgment.
