Menopause, the middle years, and what still works
Fat shifts to the middle, muscle loss speeds up, sleep gets harder. Strength training, protein, weight-bearing movement and sleep matter more — not less.
The full lesson
Around menopause, estrogen drops. Many women notice fat shifting toward the middle, muscle loss speeding up, bones losing density faster, and hot flashes wrecking sleep — which raises hunger the next day. None of this stops fat loss from working; it changes what matters most: strength training 2–3 days a week, protein at every meal, walking and stairs for bones, and sleep protection.
For bothersome hot flashes, the Menopause Society's 2023 review found the best-supported options are hormone therapy (decided with a doctor) and several non-hormone prescriptions, plus cognitive-behavioral therapy; weight loss itself helps. Supplements, "hormone-balancing" diets and detoxes did not hold up. The same muscle-and-protein message applies to men over 50 and to anyone on a weight-loss injection, where fast loss can take muscle with it.
Remember
- Strength and protein matter more now.
- Ask a clinician about symptoms; good options exist.
