How muscle is actually built

Muscle grows from three things together: progressive strength training, enough protein, and enough food. Miss one and it stalls.

The full lesson

1. Train: each muscle 2–3 times a week, 10–20 hard sets per muscle per week, 6–12 reps, close to failure but not at it, adding load over time. 2. Protein: about 0.7–1.0 g per pound of body weight per day across 3–4 meals. 3. Food: a small calorie surplus — about 200–300 calories a day above maintenance — gains roughly half a pound to one pound a month of muscle for most people; more than that is mostly fat. 4. Sleep 7+ hours; that is when repair happens.

Beginners gain fastest; after a year, gains are slower and that is normal. Track your lifts, not just the mirror. If the scale rises fast and the waist too, the surplus is too big.

Remember

  • Train, protein, small surplus, sleep.
  • Half a pound to a pound a month is real muscle.
A gentle correction: You cannot turn fat into muscle. You can lose one and build the other, slowly, at the same time — especially as a beginner.
Try this: Add a protein snack after your next strength session.
