Walking: the most underrated exercise
Walking at a "can talk, can't sing" pace improves heart, blood pressure, blood sugar, mood and sleep. Most benefits arrive by 5,000–7,000 steps a day.
The full lesson
The talk test is your speedometer. Moderate effort means you can talk in sentences but could not sing. That pace, for 150 minutes a week (30 minutes on 5 days), is where most health benefits are tied. You can split it into 10-minute pieces.
Steps: a large 2025 review found benefits rising steeply up to about 7,000 steps a day, then leveling. 10,000 is fine if you are already active; 7,000 is a realistic target for most; and going from 2,000 to 4,000 is a bigger health win than going from 8,000 to 10,000. Walking after meals is especially good for blood sugar.
Remember
- Can talk, can't sing.
- 7,000 steps is a great target; more from a low start matters most.
